Well, I had a TV in my room...and my son has one in his room. When I had a TV, I think I could catch 3 stations. When we got cable, I think I could catch 7-8 stations. Now, my son can catch almost 50 stations...so I have to keep a watchful eye. Mostly though, he's only interested in Disney and Nick and some PBS. Cartoon Network is also a favorite, but monitored. He knows what he can watch and what he can't and why he can't. Even when he goes to my mom's house, he tells her, "I'm not allowed to watch that." So, I don't know the "right" answer, but I do know what has worked for us.
I don't think we'll put a tv in our kids rooms but maybe if we have a family room one day we'll put one in there. If we did have on in our son's room, I don't think I'd hook the cable up to it, but use it for dvds/videos. Definitely have to use parental controls on the cable and keep a watchful eye like bayoumama2 said. TV just isn't what it used to be.
This is a tough question. The only thing my daughters TV can do is for her to watch movies in her room if she is playing or whatever. But she can't get any channels on it. I mostly have it on for back ground noice most of the time. But that is a good question!
